What does the name MarZ mean? According to the explanation on the band’s website, www.marzband.cz, it is “the struggle of the Roman god Mars that each of us wages with ourselves, the rawness and hope of a March morning, a look into the cosmos.” More prosaically, MarZ is the work of Markéta Zdeňková, a young singer and guitarist whose songs, on the border between genres, offer a wide range of themes, from neighbourly troubles with the butcher through a grandmother’s dark legacy to a meditative voyage aboard Ves Mírem. The album’s title song is the epic Zlatovláska (Goldilocks), which plunges into the depths of the mythology and archetypes beneath the surface of the story.
Markéta’s striking musical counterpart is Štěpán Janoušek, who switches at lightning speed between his various roles: trombonist, singer, cajón player and master of (discreet) computer effects. Together they form a very compact and sonically unusual duo. For the recording they also invited other guest musicians on several songs.
