Petr Kalfus Trio

Biography

The Petr Kalfus Trio is the Hammond trio of the saxophonist Petr Kalfus, the organist Jan Andr and the drummer Tomáš Hobzek. Kalfus, a graduate of the academy of music in Katowice and HAMU in Prague, a member of Ed Partyka’s big band and the Jazz Dock Orchestra, founded it around 2021 after the break-up of his sextet, as a more intimate line-up with a new repertoire. The trio’s music grows out of the soul-jazz tradition of organ trios and moves between straight-ahead jazz, funk and soul; besides original pieces it also plays standards, such as Carla Bley’s ballad Utviklingssang. Kalfus plays flute, saxophones and bass clarinet, Andr the Hammond organ and Hobzek drums. On Amplión Records the trio released the album Enough Space (2025), recorded at SONO studio and launched at Jazz Dock, where the saxophonist František Kop served as godfather.
