The jazz quintet Inner Spaces was formed in January 2009 at the Academy of Music in Katowice, where all its members were studying at the time. The Czech-Polish line-up consists of the trumpeter Štěpánka Balcarová, the saxophonist Luboš Soukup, the pianist Vít Křišťan, the double bassist Max Mucha and the drummer Grzegorz Masłowski. The band plays exclusively its own compositions, in which the influences of contemporary Polish and Czech jazz and Scandinavian music meet; typical features are a broad sound, melodic themes and gradually developed improvisations. During their studies they won first prize at the Krokus Jazz competition in Jelenia Góra and second prizes at Jazz Juniors in Kraków and in Gdynia. The debut album came out in 2011, and the second record Light Year with guest David Dorůžka won the Anděl award for 2012. The third album Jarní/Vernal was released by Amplión Records in 2017.
