According to the band, the name refers to the Roman god Mars as well as the rawness of a March morning. Zdeňková writes both music and lyrics, mostly in Czech, and her songs range from sincere confessions through playful jokes to meditative moods. The co-founder and other half of the original duo is the trombonist and singer Štěpán Janoušek, who also plays the cajón and handles the electronics. In 2018 MarZ expanded with the guitarist Dalibor Hrubeš, the bass guitarist Miloš Klápště and the drummer Vítězslav Patočka, and in 2020 it released an eponymous album on the Tranzistor label.
